Comparing ontologies and databases: a critical review of lifecycle engineering models in manufacturing

Abstract The literature on the modeling and management of data generated through lifecycle a manufacturing system is split into two main paradigms: product (PLM) product, process, resource (PPR) modeling. These paradigms are complementary, latter could be considered more neutral version former. There technologies associated with these ontologies databases. Database technology widespread in industry well established. Ontologies remain largely plaything academic community which, despite numerous projects publications, have seen limited implementations industrial applications. objective this paper to provide comparison between databases, offering both qualitative quantitative analyses context PLM PPR. To achieve this, article presents (1) review within systems that use databases ontologies, identifying their respective strengths weaknesses, (2) an implementation real scenario demonstrates how different approaches can used for same purpose. This experiment enable discussion comparative analysis strategies.
